CAL OSHA is governed by who?
Occupational safety & health standards board. 7 members appointed by the governor. Board is within the Department of Industrial Relations.
Division of Occupational Safety & Health
DOSH is run by the occupational safety and health standards board to carry out duties. Dosh publishes booklets covering min safety orders of the construction field. Dosh can investigate the cause of any injuries or deaths which occur in the state. they an enter any place of employment may subpoena witnesses and take testimony.
Tool Box Safety Meetings happen when?
supervisors hold meetings once every 10 working days. management must have monthly meetings.
When Dosh receives a complaint about an unsafe work environment how long does it have to investigate ?
asap but no later than 3 working days after receipt of a complaint. Non serious must be investigated no later than 14 calendar days after complaint is reported.
Labor Statistics Research
Every employer, insurance company/ doctor attending an injured employee has to file to LSR, serious injury illness or death shall be made immediately by the employer to DOSH by telephone or telegraph.
If an employee is laid off or discharged for refusing to work under violation of the safety code or safety order.
the employee may take action to claim wages for the time he is laid off or discharged because he refused to work. employee must notify his employer that he is going to make a claim with the labor commissioner within 30 days after being laid off/ discharged.

Pole Scaffolds
are the usual type used in construction of a building, the base of the upright poles rest on the ground and are not suspended. All wooded pole scaffolds over 60ft heigh must be designed by a licensed civil engineer.
Light Trade Scaffold
used by carpenters, lathers, shinglers, painters, plasterers, sheet metal works and other trades not using heavy tools. Platforms must be a min of 20 inch wide and max 10 ft long.
Heavy Trade Scaffold
used by bricklayers, stoe masons, stone cutters, concrete workers and other trades using heavy tools. platforms must be a min of 4 ft wide and max 7 ft long.

Railings
Horse Scaffolds
can be used in various sizes and heights but are limited to 10 ft in height. lumber used on this has to be selected lumber grade. Distance between horse supporting a platform must not exceed 10ft for light trades. 7 1/2 for heavy trades. for spans up to mac 10 ft planks no smaller than 2”x10”. planks shall overlap at all supports by at least 6 inch.

Ladder Facts
-Step ladder cannot exceed 20 ft in length and rungs must be at least 11 1/2 inch long and spaced 12 inch apart vertically.

misdemeanor
1. violates standard or special order fine u to 6 months in jail 5k in fines or both

Asbestos Abatement certification and DOSH registration
contractor must be certified with CSLB and registered with CAL/OSha for any work that involves 100 sqft or more of surface area of asbestos.
- pass asbestos certification exam, than register with the asbestos contractor registration unit of DOSH. cant work unless you have a license.

involves less than 100sqft no certification required
- you must file a carcinogen report of use form with he occupational carcinogen control unit of DOSH.

Facts Asbestos
will not show up for 10-30 years
- construction built proper to 1980 has asbestos
- it is safe when it is wet, installed or new tile over it. and left alone. it is dangerous when it is dry removed, sprayed and firable.
