A

Ruling Class 統治(ruling/governing)階級(class)

C: tung2 zi6 gaai1 kap1
M: tǒng zhì jiē jí

This is the consistent translation from Google on numerous webpages but I’ve never used the term with folks - it makes sense though so I think folks will get it.

Working class

A

Working class 勞工(Labour)階層(class/stratum)

C: lou4 gung1 gaai1 cang4
M: láo gōng jiē céng

Searching on Google there are a lot of alternates (i.e. 工作(work)階級(class), 工人(worker)階級(class) and more…) but I think Wilson told me to use 勞工階層 and Linda said the same in Mandarin

Gentrification

A

Gentrification 貴(expensive)族(“people”?)化(“-ication”)

C: gwai3 zuk6 faa3
M: guì zú huà

I guess 貴族 means gentry, which makes it a pretty good translation I think :) Alternates are 高檔化,昂貴化。 I’m not knowledgeable enough to speak well on the differences between them but generally my sense is 高檔 (high class) and 昂貴 (luxurious/extravagant).

Q

Developer

A

Developer 發展(develop)商

C: faat3 zin2 soeng1
M: fā zhǎn shāng

This is the translation I use with people. Note that 發展 means develop in a general sense (I.e. Develop/nurture a group, develop/deepen a relationship)

An alternate translation is 開(open)發商

17
Q

Benefit

A

Benefit (verb??) 得益

C: dak1 jik1
M: dé yì

18
Q

Interest

A

Interest (noun) 利益

C: lei6 jik1
M: lì yì

19
Q

Care

A

Care (verb) 關心

C: gwaan1 sam1
M: guān xīn

20
Q

Workshop

A

Workshop 工作坊

C: gung1 zok3 fong1
M: gōng zuò fāng

I think 工作坊 is the best and more official translation of “workshop” but it is a term I don’t use very often. I only learned it recently, after I translated the flyer, hence in the flyer:

Workshop 研討會

C: jin4 tou2 wui2
M: yán tǎo huì

This translation is like an abbreviation where in this case 研 is short for 研究 (research, investigate, examine) and 討 is short for 討論 ( discussion). Hence why I use this translation more often.

21
Q

Indigenous people

A

Indigenous people 原(original)住(live)民(people).

C: jyun4 zyu6 man4
M: yuán zhù mín

I’m not sure what the translations for Indigenous/Aboriginal/First Nations would be (I.e. Capturing the differences in the English) but this translation seems to capture Indigenous so I use it.

22
Q

Facilitate

A

Facilitate/chair 主持

C: zyu2 ci4
M: zhǔ chí

So like facilitator 主持人。 Or like “who wants to facilitate today’s meeting?” 誰想主持今天的會議?(written translation; I’ll say the vernacular Cantonese).

23
Q

Social justice

A

Social justice 社會(”social” used as an adjective here, same two characters can be used as a noun, “society”) 公義 (justice)

C: se5 wui2 gung1 ji6
M: shè huì gōng yì

I use this translation. Another translation is 社會正義. Not sure what the difference is, 正義 has this sense of “right” “righteousness”. For example 正確 means “correct” (opposite of “incorrect”)

24
Q

We are on unceded coast Salish territory

A

Just stringing together the vocabulary we looked at earlier for this territory acknowledgement:

We are gathered on unceded Coast Salish territory 我們在西岸原住民未同意交出的領土聚會

C: ngo5 mun4 zoi6 sai1 ngon6 jyun4 zyu6 man4 mei6 tung4 ji3 gaau1 ceot1 dik1 ling5 tou2 zeoi6 wui6
M: wǒ men zài xī àn yuán zhù mín wèi tóng yì jiāo chū de lǐng tǔ jù huì

Credits to Beverly for translating this!!

我們(we)在(on)西(west)岸(coast)原住民(Indigenous people)未同意交出(unceded)的領土(territory)聚會(“gathering” grammatically as a verb if used like this in a sentence. Same two words 聚會 for “gathering” as a noun but grammatically will be in a sentence differently)

25
Q

Organizer

A

Organizer 組織(organize)人員(person)

C: zou2 zik1 jan4 jyun4
M: zu3 zhi1 ren2 yuan2

Organizing 組織(organize)工作 (work)

C: zou2 zik1 gung1 zok3
M: zu3 zhi1 gong1 zuo4

There may be other ways of saying this but this is how I’ve heard it being used and that’s what I’m saying in my work.

26
Q

Yellow peril supports black power

A

Yellow peril supports Black power 黃(yellow)禍(peril,disaster,calamity)支持(support)黑(black)權(power)主義(-ism)

C: wong4 wo6 zi1 ci4 hak1 kyun4 zyu2 ji6
M: huang2 huo4 zhi1 chi2 hei1 quan2 zhu3 yi4

27
Q

Left wing

A

Left 左(left)翼(wing)

M: zuo3 yi4
C: zo2 jik6

I think just saying “left” in Chinese is too hard to understand as politically left. So I used left-wing as the translation. My parents didn’t seem to recognize the term though I’ve heard it on the radio. After me starting to say it more, they are starting to understand it.
