Caffiene exctraction Flashcards
Component of tea bag
chlorophyll , caffeine ,cellulose ,tannins
- We won’t find all of them in the tea grain; water soluable will migrate from tea to water ( since they are small molecules
- (Tannin chlorophyll caffeine )<- we drink those
- Cellulose remain in the tea leaves ( since it’s a big molecule it won’t go to the water
Purpose of lab
eliminating component to end with caffeine only
To introduce the students into the technique of molecular isolation through extraction
and crystallization.
What is the purpose of adding sodium carbonate ( Na2CO3)
sodium carbonate (base) will react with tannins(acid) to neutralize it and the reaction will give us salt of tannins
Why shouldnt we have a foam when we shake?
bc when we will add DCM we need 2 layers, if there are foam we I’ll have 3 layers.
(DCM evaporate at warm temp
Liquid liquid extraction: tea+ DCM)
What do we have in the dark layer
salt of tannins
What do we have in the transparent layer:?
caffeine
what will happen to the more soluble in one phase
it will migrate
(Caffein is soluble in water however ,Caffeine is more soluble in DCM which’s why it turned form dark to transparent
/tannins soluble in DCM. but now they are salt which isnt Soluble in DCM)
why anhydrous sodium sulfate ?
to remove the dark phase drops ( absorb dark phase)
(Nature of dark phase is aqueous
Sodium sulfate absorb the dark phase since it absorb humidity )
what is Anhydrous?
without water
Purpose of extracting a component :
- purification
- medicine
- Check for caffeine
- Control check
When substance change it should not?
change color
( if color changed that means something else happen. )
If you degrade the substance it turn from
brown to black
