Caesar Flashcards
Marullus and Flavius
Yelled at the people for switching up on Pompey, very beginning
Caesar
Leader after Pompey, betrayed and killed by Brutus and the conspirators, said to be “ambitious” SUPERSTITIOUS. Thinks Cassius is a threat because he is power hungry “skinny, not fat” and observant, thinks too much. Public vs. private image
Mark Antony
Friend of Caesar’s, “righ-hand man” in his rule, speaks out against Brutus at the funeral. Offers Caesar the crown thrice and thrice is turned down. Seen as useless without Caesar by Brutus
Soothsayer
blind man, warns Caesar of the “ides of march”
Brutus
noble, close friend of Caesars, betrays him because he thinks its for the good of Rome
Cassius
opposed Caesar, lead conspirator, sent fake letters from the “people” to Brutus to get him on their side. Manipulated Brutus by sucking up to him. uses mirror metaphor to show Brutus his worth & says Caesar can’t see it
Casca
conspirator, summarized events at games (caesar refusing crown, having a seizure). Sees strange omens (raining fire, lion in capitol not attacking, men on fire walking around, owls during day, slave’s hand on fire doesn’t burn) interperets as something bad will happen & gods are upset
Calpurnia
Caesar’s wife, has dreams of his death and warns him not to go.
Cinna
Conspirator
Cicero
Metellus cimber wants to include him in conspiracy (old/wise, credible), Brutus doesn’t because Cicero would rather be independent/lead than follow their plan
Decius
Makes sure Caesar goes to the capitol instead of being worried abt the warnings and omens by flattering him, reinterprets calpurnias dream to convince Caesar
Portia
Brutus’ wife, strong woman, “think i am no more than my sex (a woman)”
Brutus’ soliloquy
Compares Caesar to snake in serpents egg, have to kill him before he can attack. Thinks Caesar won’t be good leader so has to kill him for good of Rome.
Artimedorus
Knows about the plan, tries to warn Caesar
Cinna (the poet)
killed for having same name as cinna the conspirator, shows herd mentality and poor decisions made by group
Brutus’ funeral speech
Reasons for killing Caesar: he was ambitious
would you rather caesar live and die all slaves
whats good for rome
Antony funeral speech
Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is honorable, but what about all the good things he did
Reads the will
id rather wrong the dead, myself, and you all than wrong such honorable men
says one thing, means the other (enrages the people, connects emotionally)
