CAD Terms Flashcards
this menu displays commands for printing, saving, drawing utilities and other non-drawing tools
Application Menu
this toolbar is used for quick access to common commands like New, Open, Save, Undo, and Plot
Quick Access Toolbar
this toolbar has most of the commands/tools that you will use while you are working. It runs across the top of the drawing spaces and contains Panels- each panel has a group of associated tools. You can switch to different Panels by clicking on the Tabs at the top of the ribbon
Ribbon
these rectangular items run along the top of the Ribbon and look like “folder” tabs. A series of Tabs make up the Ribbon (Home, Insert, Manage, etc) and organizes the Tools into common groups
Tabs
this is a grouping of common commands and/or Tools on the Ribbon
Panels
this is the space in the middle of the screen where everything is drawn
Drawing Space
this toolbar allows to see and change different modes of your drawing such as Ortho, Object Snap, Grid, Dynamic Input, Line Weight, etc
Status Bar
all objects are drawn on a layer. You can group objects (such as line types) on a single layer and organize your drawing
Layer
this defines how wide lines on an object are displayed on the screen and when printed
Line Weight
all objects are drawn with a particular line type. Examples would be Solid, Center, Dashed, etc
Line Type
this is used to set the basic drawing units for your drawing. For example, you can use inches or millimeters depending on your needs. You can also set the precision you want displayed, such nearest 1/4”, 1/2”, 1/64”, etc
Units
this is a method of “snapping” to certain, precise points on an object. it is toggled on or off by pressing the F3 key
Object Snaps
this is a drawing mode that allows you to draw only perpendicular lines. It is toggled on or off by pressing the F8 key
Ortho Mode
moves objects a specified distance in a specified direction. Select the object to be moved, specify the base point, and click the new (second) point
Move
duplicates an object. Copies the object using the distance and direction specified by a base point followed by a second point
Copy
rotates selected objects around a base point to an absolute angle. (a) Select the Object and press Enter. (b) Specify the Base Point (a point on the object). (c) Specify the Rotation Angle by entering an angle
Rotate
create objects that represent half of a drawing, select them, and mirror them across a specified line to create the other half. The two specified points become the endpoints of a line about which the selected objects are mirrored
Mirror
used to trim objects such that they end exactly at the cutting edges defined by other intersecting objects. (Select more of the object than needed before you start to trim)
Trim
connects two lines, arcs or circles by means of a smoothly fitted arc of specified radius. (Down arrow key, Select Radius)
Fillet
trims two intersecting lines a specified distance from the intersection and connects the trimmed and connects the trimmed ends with a new line segment. (Down arrow key, select Distance)
Chamfer
constructs an entity parallel to the specified one, either through a given point or at a given distance
Offset
extends a line until it meets another line or object. Left click and hold the endpoint grip you want to extend as you make the line longer
Extend
snaps to either the beginning or the end fo a line on an object
Endpoint
snaps to the exact middle of a line or an arc
Midpoint
snaps to the center-point of a circle or arc
Center
snaps to the point where two objects cross
Intersection
will snap so that the result is perpendicular to line selected
Perpendicular
snaps to the “geometric” center of a rectangle rather than trying to find the two midpoints
Geometric Center
to move around the drawing by dragging the drawing area around your scream
Pan
to view either a smaller section of your drawing. Scroll your mouse wheel to zoom in or out
Zoom
to select an object by ‘left-clicking’ on it
