what is Medlink
MedLink is a hospital-based medical advisory service that provides emergency medical assistance to the aviation industry.
Medlink is to be contacted in air when
○ For any medical situation where the health of a passenger is in question
○ When CC call for an onboard physician.
Medlink is to be called on ground when
o For life-threatening medical emergencies
o To evaluate the medical condition of an individual
o If illness or injury may affect health or safety in flight
if a medical situation occurs prior to a flight
Ground personnel will also contact MedLink in the event of a medical situation or if an evaluation is required prior to boarding. A MedLink physician will determine whether the passenger can safely travel on the flight.
if a medical situation occurs on board, what do you do
◼ Advise the FD who will notify the FCM immediately
◼ Assess the medical situation
◼ Administer first aid
If the CC judges that the first aid treatment is inefficient and/or the health of the person is at risk:
◼ Ask for onboard medical assistance (e.g. physician, nurse, paramedic)
◼ Advise the FCM
◼ Complete the MedLink Pilot Initiated Patch Checklist
◼ Submit the completed checklist to the FCM who will initiate the MedLink patch
◼ Follow the instructions of the MedLink physician
◼ Ensure ongoing communication between the MedLink physician and the onboard medical volunteer
If an emergency arises less than 1 hr prior to landing
it may not be possible for the FCM to initiate contact with MedLink, however, the FCM will advise the destination airport and request that paramedics meet the aircraft upon arrival.
what is the role of a medlink Physician
is to offer medical advice and recommend a plan of care for medical situations they will also determine;
◼ The situation warrants the use of the medical kit
◼ The condition of the individual is stable enough to continue to the scheduled destination or a diversion to another destination is recommended.
what are the deciding factors whether to divert
the MedLink team will evaluate the available airports’ medical resources as well as the capabilities to support the aircraft type being operated.
what does the pilot need to initiate a call to Medlink
