C9: The Atmosphere Flashcards
What was the main gas in the atmosphere in the early years?
Water Vapour.
What is the main gas in the atmosphere now?
Nitrogen.
Give 3 reasons why levels of carbon dioxide decreased.
- Plants evolved, so more photosynthesis. 2. CO2 was trapped in the formation of sedimentary rocks. 3. CO2 dissolved in the ocean.
Why did oxygen in the atmosphere increase?
- From Algae, plants evolved, so more photosynthesis happened, releasing more oxygen.
Name 5 gases present in the atmosphere.
Water Vapour, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrogen, Ammonia
What is the effect of having soot in the atmosphere?
Global Dimming.
What is the effect of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere?
Acid rain and respiratory problems.
Name the greenhouse gases.
Methane, Water Vapour, Carbon Dioxide.
What is carbon footprint?
The total amount of carbon dioxide emitted over the full life cycle of a product, service or event. This can be offset by planting trees, etc.
How could methane emissions be reduced?
By eating less meat, less kept cows means less methane.
How could carbon dioxide emissions be reduced?
Limiting fossil fuels eg. Renewable energy.
