C9 Oil Flashcards
Crude oil
Mixture of different length hydrocarbons
Where is crude oil found
Crude oil is a finite resource found in rocks
How is crude oil formed
It was formed over millions of years from ancient sea animals and plants buried in mud. Over time, layers of rock were laid down on top, creating conditions of high pressure and temperature with an absence of oxygen to make crude oil.
Hydrocarbon
Molecule made of only hydrogen and carbon atoms
Fractions
Hydrocarbons with similar length chains
Distillation
Evaporation followed by condensation
Fractional distillation
Repeated evaporation and condensation to separate a mixture into different fractions.
Alkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH(2n+2)
What are Saturated Hydrocarbons
molecules with only single bonds
The first 4
Methane (CH4)
Ethane (C2H6)
Propane (C3H8)
Butane (C4H10)
Alkene
Contain one or more carbon-carbon double bonds
