C9 - Chemistry of the Atmosphere Flashcards
What is Phase 1 of the atmosphere’s evolution?
Volcanoes giving out gases
What is Phase 2 of the atmosphere’s evolution?
Oceans, green plants and algae absorb CO2
What is Phase 3 of the atmosphere’s evolution?
Green plants and algae producing oxygen
What are the %s of gases in today’s atmosphere?
- 80% nitrogen, approx.
- 20% oxygen, approx.
- 1% other gases (CO2, noble gases and water vapour)
What are crude oil and natural gases formed from?
Deposits of plankton under the seabed, trapped in rocks
What kind of human activity affect the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?
1) Deforestation - fewer trees means less CO2 is removed from the atmosphere
2) Burning fossil fuels - CO2 is released from the fuels
3) Agriculture - more farm animals produce more methane through their digestive processes
4) Creating waste - more landfill sites means more CO2
What type of energy do greenhouse gases absorb?
They absorb the long wavelength radiation that gets reflected back off Earth
What type of energy do greenhouse gases NOT absorb?
They DON’T absorb incoming short wavelength radiation from the Sun
An increase in global temperature could lead to what?
- Polar ice caps melting
- Changes in rainfall patterns
- Increased severity and frequency of storms
- Effects of wild species, leading to differences in their distribution
