C9 - Chemistry Of The Atmosphere Flashcards
What did the early atmosphere contain?
Co2, Nitrogen, water (due to increasing volcanic activity).
Co2 was likely dissolved into sediment.
Plants//algae converted CO2 into O2 through photosynthesis.
What is the greenhouse effect?
The greenhouse effect warms the earth;
greenhouse gases absorb long wavelength radiation that is reflected on the surface (Water vapour, CO2, C2H4)
What is global warming?
Rise in global temperatures. However, the earth’s climate is hard to predict/model. Most predictions have been incorrect.
What is carbon footprint?
Measure of how much CO2 is released into the atmosphere as a result of human activity.
How can carbon footprint be reduced?
Planting trees.
What does carbon monoxide do in the human body?
It binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells, reducing the oxygen they are able to transport.
Why is carbon monoxide known as the ‘silent killer’?
It’s odourless and colourless so it is hard to detect.
Over inhalation of CM can be fatal.
What does sulphur dioxide cause?
Cause acid rain, which corrodes metals and erodes stone.
What does nitrogen oxide cause?
Acid rain, which can cause respiratory//breathing problems.
What can soot cause?
Soot, which is released from incomplete combustion, can lead to health problems.
