C8 Tests for Gasses (practical) (pg 155) Flashcards
There are tests for 4 common Gasses.
(need to know for exam).
Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper, what colour will it go?
it will turn white. (it may turn red for a moment first though - that because a solution of chlorine is acidic).
If you put a glowing splint inside a test tube containing Oxygen, what will happen?
the oxygen will relight the glowing splint.
Bubbling carbon dioxide through (or shaking carbon dioxide with) an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (known as limewater) causes what?
causes the solution to turn cloudy.
If you hold a lit splint at the open end of a test tube containing hydrogen, what will happen?
you will get a squeaky pop (the noise comes from the hydrogen burning quickly with the oxygen in the air to form H2O)
Hadia collects the gas given off during a reaction and bubbles it through limewater. The limewater goes cloudy. Identify the gas produced? (1 mark)
Carbon Dioxide (1 mark)
