C.8 Heat Transfers by Convection and Radiation Flashcards
What is Convection.
Heat is transferred when liquid or gas PARTICLES MOVE from one area to another.
What is Convection Currents
The particles in a liquid or gas move in a circular patterns when heated.
What is Radiation?
Radiation is the transfer of energy by invisible waves that can travel great distances.
What is radiant energy?
Energy transferred from it’s source by radiation.
Why can’t convection occur in solids?
The particles in a solids can not move with the same freedom liquid and gas can.
Why do liquid and gas particles move in a circular pattern when heated?
Heated particles rise (less dense), then cool off and sink (become more dense).
What happens to the particles when radiant energy comes in contact with them?
Particles increase their kinetic energy (move around more).
