C7. Oxidation, Reduction, and Redox Reactions Flashcards
What is the oxidation number of uncombined elements?
Always 0
What is the oxidation number of ions?
Same as charge on ion
What is the oxidation number of group 1?
Always +1
What is the oxidation number of group 2?
Always +2
What is the oxidation number of aluminium?
Always +3
What is the oxidation number of hydrogen?
+1 (In hydrides, metal bonded with hydrogen, -1)
What is the oxidation number of chlorine?
-1 (When bonded with F or O, positive value)
What is the oxidation number of fluorine?
Always -1
What is the oxidation number of Oxygen?
-2 (In peroxides -1, In OF2 +2)
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons; increase in oxidation number
What is reduction?
Addition of electrons; decrease in oxidation number
What do redox half equations show?
Reduction & oxidation stages in 2 equations; half equations must have electrons
What are the rules for balancing redox half equations?
- Note species before and after reaction
- Balance any atoms except O & H
- Balance O with H2O
- Balance H with H+ ions
- Balances charges with electrons
What does a combined half equation show?
Full ionic equation, no electrons, reduction and oxidation
