C7 ORGANIC CHEM Flashcards
is crude oil finite or infinite?
finite
how is crude oil formed?
formed over million years ago from the remains of plankton (sea creature) which was buried in the mud
what is crude oil?
mixture of hydrocarbons
hydrocarbon?
molecules made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms
alkane?
saturated molecules , that is because carbon atoms are fully bonded to hydrogen atoms
viscosity?
thickness of a fluid
fluids with high viscosity flow slowly
flammability?
how easily a hydrocarbon combusts
facts about hydrocarbon fuels
release energy when combusted
during combustion the carbon and hydrogen atoms in the fuel react with oxygen , the carbon and hydrogen get oxidised.
if oxygen is unlimited this reaction produces carbon dioxide + water
what are the 2 key features of alkanes?
general formula CnH2n+2
only have single covalent bonds between the carbon atoms
what is cracking?
long chain hydrocarbon is broken down (cracked) to produce more smaller useful molecules called alkenes
describe the conditions of cracking?
catalytic cracking.
we use high temp and a catalyst (speed up reaction)
steam cracking
we use high temp and steam
features of alkenes?
double covalent bond between two carbon atoms
very useful molecules
why are alkenes very useful molecules
used to make chemicals called polymers
used as the starting chemicals material for other chemicals as well
more reactive than alkane
test for alkene?
use bromine water (orange)
if we shake our alkene with bromine water
its turns colourless
mean rate of reaction?
quantity of product formed/time taken
