C6.2.8 - Biological polymers Flashcards
What are DNA molecules made from?
They are made from monomers called nucleotides
What does a nucleotide consist of?
A phosphate group, a sugar called deoxyribose, an organic base
What are the 4 different bases?
adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
What forces or bonds are there between bases in opposite strands?
Intermolecular forces called hydrogen bonds form between bases in opposite strands
How many bonds link cytosine and guanine?
3 hydrogen bonds
How many bonds link adenine and thymine?
2 hydrogen bonds
What are protein molecules made from?
Monomers called amino acids
What are carbohydrates?
They are compounds if carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They include simple sugars, such as deoxyribose and sucrose
What is sucrose made from?
Glucose and fructose
What does starch consist of?
Very many simple sugar molecules joined together
What is a complex carbohydrate?
Polymer made from sugar molecules
