C6 Electrolysis Flashcards
what is electrolysis
the process of splitting a compound into its separate elements by passing electricity through an electrolyte
electrolysis in molten / aqueous solutions
ions are free to move and carry their charge to the electrodes
cathode
negative electrode- attracts positive ions( metal) ions reduced at cathode
anode
positive electrode( right)- attracts negative ions - ions oxidised here
in aqueous solutions
hydrogen (cathode) and hydroxide (anode) produced
aluminium ore
bauxite - has a very high melting point
process of aluminium extraction
purified from bauxite
mixed with cryolite to lower MP
melted
then usual electrolysis
cons of aluminium extraction
requires a lot of energy to melt the oxide and a lot of energy to pass through in electrolysis
pros of Al
useful metal (pots, cans, planes, power cables)
