C5 - Chemical Changes Flashcards
What is a neutralisation?
A reaction that occurs between an acid and a base
What is the difference between a base and an alkalis?
Many bases are insoluble in water (including ALL metal oxides and SOME metal hydroxides) whereas alkalis are bases which are soluble in water
What are the reactants and products of a neutralisation reaction?
Acid + base —> salt + water
Where does the product water come from?
The H+ ions in the ACID and the OH- ions in the BASE
Whats the difference between strong acids and weak acids?
•strong acids fully ionise in water/aqueous solution
•weak acids only partially ionise in water/aqueous solution
What does a having a higher pH mean for an acid?
Less acidic
What happens as pH decreases by one unit?
The hydrogen ion of the solution increases by a factor of 10
What does it mean if a solution has a pH of 7?
It is neutral
