Q
Describe the differences between strong and weak acids in water.
A
- A strong acid ionises completely in water.
* A weak acid does not fully ionise in water. Also it is a reversible reaction making it an equilibrium mixture.
1
Q
Give three examples of strong acids.
How are they different to weak acids?
A
• Hydrochloric acid
• Nitric acid
• Sulphuric acid
They have a lower pH than weak acids at the same concentration
2
Q
Describe the difference between the concentration and the strength if an acid.
A
- The concentration is how many moles of acid is dissolved in 1dm3.
- The strength of an acid is determined by the way it ionises. A strong acid produces more H+ ions than a weak acid at the same concentration.
