C5 Flashcards

1
Q

What does conjugation produce

A

Enhanced stability
Changes to structure ( creates polarity)
Different reactivity
Characteristic spectroscopic behaviour ( absorption of ultraviolet and visible light ) which makes conjugated molecules coloured

4
Q

What happens when a molecule is conjugated

A

Extended pi bond is formed and the electrons are delocalised throughout the extended pi bond

Q

What effect does conjugation have on single Bond

A

It’s shorter in length
Have semi double bond characteristics

6
Q

Why do alternating double and single bonds have conjugation

A

They both have continuous uninterrupted run of 3 atoms or more each with an ubhybridised p orbital
( sp2 or sp hybridisation is a requirement for conjugation)
