C5 Flashcards
What does conjugation produce
Enhanced stability
Changes to structure ( creates polarity)
Different reactivity
Characteristic spectroscopic behaviour ( absorption of ultraviolet and visible light ) which makes conjugated molecules coloured
What is a conjugated molecule
Has alternating double and single bond
Starts and ends with a double Bond
When does conjugation happen without alternating bonds
When a lone pair is adjacent to a double bond
What happens when a molecule is conjugated
Extended pi bond is formed and the electrons are delocalised throughout the extended pi bond
What effect does conjugation have on single Bond
It’s shorter in length
Have semi double bond characteristics
Why do alternating double and single bonds have conjugation
They both have continuous uninterrupted run of 3 atoms or more each with an ubhybridised p orbital
( sp2 or sp hybridisation is a requirement for conjugation)
