C5 Flashcards
Define exothermic reaction
Transfer energy from the reacting molecules to the surroudings - temperature of the surroundings increase.
3 examples of exothermic reactions
Combustion (burning), certain oxidation reactions, neutralisation
2 uses of exothermic reactions
Hand warmers, self-heating cans for food and drink
Define endothermic reaction
Take in energy from their surroundings - temperature of surroundings decrease.
Example of an endothermic reaction
Thermal decomposition
Define activation energy
The minimum amount of energy that particles must have in order to react.
Are exothermic energy changes positive or negative?
Negative
Are endothermic energy changes positive or negative?
Positive
How to break a chemical bond?
Use energy (endothermic)
How to make a chemical bond?
Release energy (exothermic)
Define independent variable
One which we change.
Define dependent variable
One which changes because we change the independent variable.
Define control variable
Variable that is kept the same during the experiment.
Why is a polystyrene cup used?
It is a good thermal insulator so reduces heat loss.
