What is windshear?

A

A sustained change in wind velocity along the aircraft flight path, which occurs significantly faster than the aircraft can accelerate or decelerate

What are typical conditions conducive to windshear?

A
  • frontal/squall/thunderstorm activity
  • low level inversions
  • local terrain or buildings considered in relation to wind speed and direction

What should a windshear report contain?

How long should this be broadcast?

A
  • windshear warning
  • height or height band
  • time
  • effect (e.g. speed gain/loss, vertical speed, drift)

The report should be broadcast to inbound/outbound aircraft until confirmation is received the condition no longer exists
