C.4 - Conservation of Biodiversity Flashcards
Define indicator species.
organisms that live in a specific ecological niche and have a limited tolerance to abiotic factors
Provide an example of an indicator species
Lichens (intolerant to air pollution) and macroinvertebrates (intolerant to low dissolved oxygen)
What is in situ conservation
Conserving endangered species within their natural habitat such as reserves
What is ex situ conservation
Conserving endangered species outside their natural habitat eg zoos, botanic gardens and seed banks
What is an example of ex situ conservation?
The Arabian oryx - was captured for breeding programs and successfully reintroduced. Promoted genetic diversity!
What factors can promote conservation?
Large reserve sizes, edge effects and habitat corridors.
