C4: Chemical Calculations Flashcards
How to work out the relative formula mass?
The relative atomic masses of all the atoms in the molecular formula added together.
How to calculate the % mass of an element in a compound?
Ar x number of atoms of that element / Mr of the compound x 100
How to work out the number of moles?
Mass in g / Mr
How to work out reacting masses?
- Write tick and ? on balanced equation
- Find moles (= 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔/𝑴𝒓)
- Find moles ? (use balanced equation)
- Find mass ? (= 𝒎𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒔 x 𝑴𝒓)
How to calculate reacting ratios?
Find the Mr of what is given.
Put it in a ratio.
Divide by the smallest mole.
Write it in an equation.
How to work out the limiting reagent?
Convert reactants into moles
Divide by coefficient
Reactant with smaller number is limiting
How to calculate percentage yield?
Actual mass of product produced / maximum theoretical mass of product possible x 100
How to calculate atom economy?
Relative formula mass of desired products / relative formula mass of all reactants x 100
What are 5 things that you must consider when choosing which reaction is best?
Percentage yield
Reaction rate
Reversibility (equilibrium position)
Energy cost
Cost of reactants
How to calculate concentration?
Amount of solute (g) / volume of solution (dm3)
Amount of solute (g) / volume of solution (cm3) x 1000
How to calculate the number of moles in titration?
Concentration x volume / 1000
How to get g/dm3 from mol/dm3?
Concentration x Mr
