C4 Acids and Alkalis Flashcards
Acids
A substance with a pH less than 7; they neutralise alkalis.
Alkalis
A substance with a pH greater than 7; they neutralise acids and their bases will dissolve in water
Bases
Substances that neutralise acids. Some bases dissolve in water to form alkalis.
Catalysts
Substances that speed-up reactions or help reactions take place.
Chloride
A substance that contains chlorine ions bonded to metal ions.
Dilute
To add water to acid or alkali to reduce the number acid or alkali molecules in a particular volume.
Harmful
Describes a substance as dangerous to life.
Hazard Symbols
Labels on chemical containers warning about the ways the chemical can be dangerous.
Hydrochloric Acid
A strong acid formula HCl with molecules formed from hydrogen and chlorine ions.
Indicator
Chemicals that change colour depending on the pH.
Neutral
Describes a solution with a pH of 7.
Neutralise / Neutralisation
To react an acid with an alkali to produce a neutral solution containing a salt.
Nitrate
Substance formed when nitric acid reacts with a metal.
Nitric Acid
A strong acid; formula HNO3 with molecules containing hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen.
pH
A scale used to measure the strength of acids and alkalis.
