C4 Flashcards
What is an alkali?
A base that forms hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water
What are acids?
Acids form hydrogen (H+) ions when dissolved in water
What happens in oxidation reactions?
Losing electrons
What happens in reduction reactions?
Gaining electrons
Metals oxides
Acid + metal oxide = salt + water
Metal carbonates
Acid + carbonate = salt + water + carbon dioxide
Metal hydroxides
Acid + hydroxide = salt + water
What is an example of a Titration indicator?
Methyl orange (yellow in alkali and red in acid)
What is another titration indicator?
Phenolphthalein (pink in alkali and colourless in acid)
How is the strength of an acid determined?
How much it ionises in water
Are all H+ ions produced
Examples of strong acids
Nitric acid
Sulfuric acid
What is an example of weak acids
Ethanoic acid (used in vinegar)
What is a weak acid?
An acid that only partially ionises in water so not all of its molecule break up to form H+ ions
What are Electrolytes?
Ionic compounds that dissolves to make solution that conducts electricity
What is electrolysis?
Splitting of ionic compounds into their individual elements using a solution that conducts electricity
