C3.1.1 - Nanoparticles Flashcards
What is the approximate diameter of a nanoparticle?
1-100 nanometres
Can you see a nanoparticle with a normal microscope?
No
Nanoparticles are measured in which units?
Nanometres
How many nanometres are in 1 metre?
1 billion
What is a nanoparticle?
A tiny piece of a substance made up of just a few hundred atoms.
Why are nanoparticles special?
They have different properties to normal sized pieces of the same substance.
What is it about nanoparticles that gives them such special properties?
They have a huge surface area (more atoms on their surface)
What is meant by the properties of a substance?
Its features
How do the properties of gold change when they are in nanoparticles?
Normally yellow coloured but nanoparticles look red when mixed in water. Normal gold cannot be mixed with water.
