Q

Say sodium hydroxide is added and a green solution forms but in 2 mins it’s brown. Is it iron 2 or iron 3?

A

Iron 2

Take first result because it’s probably oxidised and changed colour

Q

How to test for nitrate ions

A

Add sodium hydroxide and powdered aluminium.

Use red litmus paper to see if ammonia gas is released, if so it turns blue and nitrate ions are present.
