Q

What is a REDOX reaction?

A
  • *red**uction
  • *ox**idation

Oxidation adds more oxygen to become neutral
reduction reduces oxygen to become neutral

Q

What is a half equation?

A

This involves the transfer of electrons in order to make a neutral charge

Eg.

2Mg(s)+O2(g)=2MgO

Half equation:

Mg->Mg(+2)+2e(-)
|
|
> this creates a neutral charge

Q

What is an ionic compound?

A

They are made up of POSITIVE METAL ions and NEGATIVE METAL ions.

Because positive and negative attract strongly,
It takes alot of energy to seperate them

8
Q

What is electrolosis?

A

This separates ionic compounds

When an ionic compound is MOLTEN or

in SOLUTION the current causes the ionic compound

to SPLIT UP and form new substances

A

The substance that the current passes

through and splits it up is called an

ELECTROLYTE

Negative ions go to positive electrode
Positive ions go to negative electrode

Anions (positive) < cathode (negative )

Cations (negative) < anode (positive)
