C3 Flashcards
What is metal oxide?
A compound formed when a metal ionically bonds to oxygen
What is the reactivity series?
The order of elements in terms of their reactivity
What does solution mean?
Dissolved in water
What is acid?
A substance that releases H+ ions and has a ph below 7
What is a base?
A substance that neutralizes an acid and has a ph above 7
What is a alkali?
A type of soluble base
What is salt?
It is a ionic compound formed when acid and base react
What is neutralisation?
Its when acid reacts with a base to produce a salt and water
What is a carbonate?
Its ionic compounds containg carbon and oxygen
What does soluble mean?
A substance that disloves
What does insoluble mean
A substance that dont dissolve
What is electrolysis?
Splitting up an ionic substance using electricity
What does molten mean?
Turned into a liquid
What happens during oxidation?
Gain oxygen, lose hydrogeon
What happens durung reduction?
It loses oxygen, and gains hydrogeon
What are the 2 most reactive metals?
Potassium and sodium
What are the 2 least reactive metals?
Gold and platinum
How are highly reacted metals extracted?
Using electrolysis
How are base metals extracted?
By smelting
