C2b Topic 4 Flashcards
1
Q
properties of metals
A
- bendy and good conductors
conduct electricity well - electrical wire
malleable - easily bent or hammered into a different shape - transition metals have similar properties
high melting points
colourful compounds e.g in hair dyes - their structure gives them these properties
mettalic bonds give the metal a giant structure consisting of positive ions and free electrons - outer electrons ate delocalised
layers of atoms cab easily slide over each other, so can be bent easily
2
Q
group 1 - alkali metals
A
- are soft and have low boiling points
- react vigorously in water
lithium takes longer than sodium or potassium so is the least reactive, potassium is the most reactive as it reacts I. the shortest amount of time to react - reaction with water produces hydrogen gas - can see fizzing
a lighted splint will show hydrogen has been produced
3
Q
group 7 - halogens
A
- at room temp
chlorine is a reactive, poisonous, dense green gas
bromine is a dense, poisonous, orange liquid
iodine is a dark gray crystalline solid - react with metals to form metal halides
- react with hydrogen to form hydrogen halides - soluble, dissolve in water to form hydrochloric acid
- more reactive halogens will displace less reactive ones
