C2.1 Structure and bonding Flashcards
What happens when two elements react together?
They create compounds by gaining, losing or sharing electrons
Describe ionic bonding
between metals and non-metals
ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points because they form a LATTICE of oppositely charged ions that attract very strongly
(positive goes first when drawing)
Describe covalent bonding
between 2 non-metals
covalent bonds are strong (intramolecular) and create stable molecules, they are NOT interested in bonds with other molecules (intermolecular)
Describe metallic bonding
metals have giant structures made from closely packed metals atoms in regular layers
they are held together by electrons from the outermost shells
these electrons are free to move within the giant metallic lattice
What is the overall charge of an ionic compound?
zero - the charges on the ions in an ionic compound always cancel each other out
