C2 : Three States of Matter Flashcards
What are the 3 states of matter
Solids, Liquids and Gases
Why are solids hard to compress
Because the particles in a solid are packed together in a regular pattern
Why do solids have a fixed shape and cannot flow from place to place
Because the particles vibrate around a fixed position
Why are liquids hard to compress
Because the particles are close together and have no space to move into when compressed
Why do particles in a liquids fill a container
Because the particles in liquids are weaker and can move around
Why are gases easy to compress
Because there is a lot of space between the particles
Why do gases spread out to fill a container
Because particles in a gas move quickly and randomnly
How do we change a state of a substance
Putting in or taking out energy
Why does sodium chloride have a high melting point
The forces of attraction between the particles are very strong
