Q

What is the lithosphere made up of?

A

the crust and the upper part of the mantle, made up of jigsaw pieces called tectonic plates, cold and rigid and can be over 100 KM thick in places

Q

is the mantel runny or solid?

A

non of them it flows very slowly because the further down you go the hotter it gets

Q

what are tectonic plates?

A

they are big rocky like shafts which float on the mantel because they are less dense

Q

on the tectonic plates are 7 different continents which show the different plates, how often do the plates move every year?

Q

why do we use seismic waves?

A

because the crust is to hard to drill through and it means that we can study the earths structure, these are made by earthquakes and man made explosions

Q

what can we use to draw conclusions about the structure of the earth?

A

we can look at the time it takes to travel through the earth and where the earthquakes are detected

Q

what does a p-wave travel through and what does an s- wave travel through? And what structure of the earth can they pass through?

A

p- waves travel through liquids and solids and s-waves can only travel through solids, s- waves can travel through the mantle but s-waves are not detected in the cores shadow so the outer core must be a liquid P-waves travel faster through the core which tells us that the inner core is solid
