C2 Structure and Bonding Flashcards
Are the melting/boiling points of small molecules high or low and why?
Low because liquids have weaker forces between molecules so won’t take much energy to overcome the bonds.
Do small molecules have conductivity and why?
They have no conductivity because there are non metals reacting with non metals which do not have conductivity
What property does alloys have and why?
Properties of ionic compounds
High mp and bp
Conduct electricity when melted/dissolved in water
How much is a millimetre?
1x10-3
How much is a micrometer?
1x10-6
How much is a nanometre?
1x10-9
How big is a nanoparticle?
Has a diameter between 1-100 nanometres
How many atoms do nanoparticle contain?
A few hundred atoms
As the particle size decreases by ten times..
The surface area : volume ratio increases by ten times
