C2 - Separation Techniques Flashcards
What is a particle model?
It focuses on how close particles are, if they’re in a pattern, and if they can move.
Is changing state a chemical reaction?
No. It is a reversible, physical change
What is a mixture?
Something that contains more than one element or compound that are not chemically bonded together.
What does potable mean?
Drinkable
Why is tap water not pure?
It has dissolved substances in it
What is filtration?
Separating solid from liquid, using filter paper e.g. sand in water
What is evaporation and crystallisation?
Separating a dissolved substance from the liquid - evaporate the liquid and let the solute crystalize
What is distillation?
Separating liquids using their different boiling points - heat until one evaporates, then collect the vapour and condense it.
What is fractional distillation?
Separating multiple liquids - heat until one evaporates, collect vapour and condense, repeat.
Why do we use pencil and not pen in the paper chromatography core practical?
So it doesn’t blur the results
