C2 Periodic table Flashcards
Who developed the first Periodic Table and what did he discover
John Dalton - “ law of atomic weight”
Who developed the second periodic table and what did he discover
John Newland - “ Law of octaves”
Who developed the third periodic table and what did he discover
He grouped the known elements with similar properties into column. He saw gaps in his pattern so left space for unknown elements. He arranged his table by atomic weight but discovered it should be done by atomic number
how is the modern periodic table arranged
By increasing atomic number
What is group one called
Alkaline metals
What is group 7 called
Halogens
What is group zero called
Noble gases
Why are group 7 elements less reactive as you go down the group
As the outer shell is further from the nucleus, so it’s harder to attract electrons
What happens to reactivity in group one as you go down
Increases as out electrons are further from the nucleus and easier to lose
Two typical properties of transition metals
They form coloured compounds and act as catalysts
What happens when alkaline metals reactive oxygen
They form metal oxides
Why are alkaline metals stored in oil
To prevent them from reacting with oxygen or water in the air
As you go down group one what happens to melting and boiling points
Decreases because metallic bonds weaken making it easier to lose electron
As you go down group 7, what happens to melting and boiling points
Increases as inter molecular forces strengthen which require more energy to break
As you go down group 0, what happens to melting and boiling points
Increases due to stronger intermolecular forces
What observations could you make when group one metals react with water
Vigourous, fizzing, may ignite
Do halogens conduct electricity
They are poor conductors of heat and electricity
