C2) Classification Of Matter Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a type of matter that consists of only one kind of particle. It had uniform composition throughout.
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is an element?
An element is a pure substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances. There is only one type of atom. All elements are listed on the periodic table.
Ex. Gold, oxygen
What is a compound?
A compound is a pure substance that contains two or more different
elements in a fixed portion.
Ex. Water, baking soda.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains two or more types of particle that are simply mixed together. The composition is not uniform from sample to sample.
What is a Heterogeneous (MECHANICAL) Mixture?
A Mechanical Mixture is where different components can be seen and can be separated by physical means.
Ex. Party mix, pizza, lucky charms
What are Homogeneous Mixtures
Includes solutions and alloys
Solutions are mixtures that LOOK like a pure substance, but is a mixture of more than one type of particle.
Ex. Apple juice, brass, air
What is a solution?
In a solution there is always more solvent than solute. The solute dissolves in the solvent.
Ex. Solvent: water. Solute: sugar.
What is an Alloy?
An Alloy is a type of solution where two or more metals are mixed.
Ex. Brass contains COPPER & ZINC
