Q

How do ionic bonds form?

A

Atoms are transferred from one atom to another, to form ions. Positive and negative ions are attracted to each other - this is called an electrostatic force.

Q

How do metallic bonds form?

A

Outer shell electrons delocalise, which means they are free to move around inside the structure.

The metal atoms are arranged in layers.

The electrostatic attraction between the positive metal atoms and the negative electrons holds the structure together.
