C2 Flashcards
What was the periodic table originally ordered in
Atomic weight
How did Mendeleev order his periodic table
He organised the elements into vertical columns based on their properties. Then arranged them horizontally in order of increasing atomic weight.
Why were there gaps in Mendeleevs periodic table
-Some elements didn’t fit the pattern horizontally
-he didn’t want to force the elements into the pattern so he left gaps
What are the properties of metals in the periodic table
1-3 outer shell electrons
Metallic bonding due to loss of electrons
Good conductor of electricity
Basic oxides
many react whitch acids
What are the properties of non metals
4-7 outer shell electrons
Covalent bonding
Poor conductors of electricity
Acidic oxides ( some are neutral)
Usually don’t react whitch acids
Physical characteristics of metals
Usually lustrous (shiny)
Solid at room temp excluding mercury
Malleable
High melting and boiling points
Physical characteristics of non metals
Dull
Different states at room temp
Flaky, brittle
Low melting and boiling points
What are Nobel gasses
Non metals
Monatomic
Colourless at room temp
What are the physical properties of Nobel gasses
-Very low melting and boiling point
-Going down the group the melting and boiling point increases
Which group are the Nobel gasses in
Group 0
Which group are the alkaline metals in
Group 1
What are the properties of alkaline metals
- they are soft metals
- they have relatively low densities and low melting points
- they are very reactive
Physical properties of alkaline metals
-Soft
-Low melting points that decreases going down the group
- reactivity increases as you go down the group
What group are the halogens in
Group 7
Are halogens diatomic or monatomic
Diatomic
