c2 Flashcards
what is elastic behaviour
object returns to original shape when force causing deformation is removed
what is plastic behaviour
object does not return to original shape/size
what is the elastic limit
maximum stretch and return to its original shape
what does ductile mean
easily/permanently stretched e.g., wire
describe the property brittle
not permanently stretched, breaks soon after elastic limit
what is a fracture
material breaks due to applied force
describe the physical property malleable
hammered into shape with applied force e.g., copper, iron, gold.
describe tough
resistant to cracking when force applied e.g., steel and iron
what does strong mean
requires large force to break e.g., steel
describe the property stiff
doesnt deform much when force applied, tensile stiffness (stretch) compressive stiffness (squash) e.g., iron
what is creep
stress on material causes deformation over-time
what is plastic deformation
solid material, deforms permanently when force applied
what is fatigue
structural damage
describe elastic hysteresis
loss of energy
what is tensile stress
tensile force per unit cross-sectional area
