What was the Greensboro protest?
4 Black students sat in a segregated lunch corner seat, waiting to be served until the store shut
What happened the next day at the GB Protest?
30 students joined them until all seats were filled with Black students
How were the Black students represented in the media?
Calm, well dressed black students sitting, waiting to be served
How were the White students represented in the media?
White hecklers blowing smoke, yelling, pouring food over them
When was the Freedom Rides?
1961
What was the aim of the Freedom Rides?
To test whether bus restroom facilities had been segregated, prior to a 1961 Supreme Court Ruling
What was the Freedom Rides?
A bus ride through the Deep South
Who organised the Freedom Rides?
James Farmer of CORE
What did Farmer say?
They planned the rides with the intention of provoking a crisis, for the publicity of the media
What did Farmer feel like?
Desperate measures were the only way to get the government to enforce legislations
What happened during the Freedom Rides?
One of the buses were firebombed when chased by 50 cars
Black and White riders were beaten up at many stops
What did the media cover during the Freedom Rides?
Shocking levels of violence
What happened at the end of the Freedom Rides?
They were imprisoned in Birmingham, three were killed but others kept on riding

How did MLK refine the non-violent protest rules?
- Must always be clear who is the oppressor and who is the oppressed
- Getting arrested as publicity as possible and going in peace is good publicity
- Accept as many white people as you can on your protests
- Campaigners were taught how to go limp if the police tried to move them in sit-ins
