Relative charge Relative mass
Proton : +1 1
Neutron: 0 1
Electron: -1 Very small
What is the top number and the bottom number for an element? What are they for?
Top number : Mass number = protons + neutrons
Bottom number : Atomic number = protons = electrons
What are isotopes?
Atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons.
What are ions?
Atoms which have an overall charge. Either gained or lost electrons.
Why do different isotopes have different physical properties and the same chemical properties?
Different isotopes have different physical properties (eg different density) however have the same chemical properties because that depends on the arrangement and behaviour of the electrons in an atom.
