C15.5-15.6 Flashcards
Outline the key points of the haber process?
1) H2 and N2 gases are passed over a Iron catalyst at a high temp(450 dgerees) and a high pressure(200)
2) iron speeds up the rate of reaction, so that a lower temp is used
3) some of the hydrogem and nitrogen reacts to form ammonia
4) the reaction is reversible so ammonia breaks down into nitrogen and hydrogen, it eventually reaches a dynamic equilibrium
5) on cooling , ammonia liquefies and is removed. The remaining hydrogen and nitrogen are recyled, so nothing is wasted
6) Ammonia is used for fertilizers
What is the reaction for the haber process?
N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g)
What is the temp of the haber process?
About 450 degrees
What is the pressure of the haber process?
200 atsmophere pressure
What is the catalyst used in the haber process?
Iron, speeds up the rate of both the forward and reverse reactions by the same amount
