C1.4 separating mixtures Flashcards
Evaporation
Used in a mixture with a liquid and a soluble solid; the solid will not evaporate and will be left over when the liquid evaporates
Distillation
Used to separate two liquids in a solution; a flask contains a liquid mixture to be heated to a boil, the component with the lower boiling point will change into a gas, upon contact with the water-cooled condenser, the gas will condense, trickle down into the graduated cylinder, and the other liquid remains in the flask
Filtration
used to separate a mixture containing an undissolved solid in a liquid; The mixture is poured into a funnel and the liquid falls through. The solid is left in the funnel
Paper chromatography
used to separate compounds based on the different solubility in solvents; The sample is placed on a piece of paper, water is then poured so that the water level is just below the paper line. After it has finished, to get the Rf value one must divide the distance moved by the substance by the distance moved by the solvent
