C1.3 (Seperating Mixtures) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Definition of a mixture
A
Two or more substances not chemically combined
2
Q
What are the four ways you can separate mixtures
A
Filtration , crystallisation , distillation , Chromatography
3
Q
When do you use Filtration
A
When a something is insoluble in a solvent
4
Q
What can you separate by filtration
A
Sand or Salt and Water mixtures
5
Q
When do you use Crystallisation
A
To obtain pure salt from a solution
6
Q
When should you stop heating the solution during Crystallisation
A
At the point of Crystallisation
7
Q
What does slower cooling do during Crystallisation
A
Bigger Crystals
8
Q
When should you use Distillation
A
To collect the solvent
9
Q
Explain distillation
A
- Solution Heating by a Bunsen Burner
- The Solvent (Water) Turns into vapour
- Moves into Cooling Jacket/Condenser
- The solvent is then collected into a beaker
