C12 - Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
One with only one type of atom.
What is a formulation?
A mixture designed for a useful product, e.g. ketchup, fertiliser, cleaning agents
What is the test for chlorine?
Bleaches litmus paper
When NaOH added, what happens to calcium?
White precipitate formed
When NaOH added, what happens to magnesium?
White precipitate formed
When NaOH added, what happens to aluminium?
White precipitate formed then redissolves when excess NaOH added.
When NaOH added, what happens to copper?
Blue precipitate formed
When NaOH added, what happens to iron(ll)?
Green precipitate formed
When NaOH added, what happens to iron(lll)?
Brown precipitate formed
When diluted acid and silver nitrate added, what happens to chlorine?
White precipitate formed
When diluted acid and silver nitrate added, what happens to bromine?
Cream precipitate formed
When diluted acid and silver nitrate added, what happens to iodine?
Yellow precipitate formed
What is the test for carbonate?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to solid then bubble gas through limewater. Limewater should turn cloudy.
What is the test for a sulphate ion?
Add hydrochloric acid and barium chloride. If white precipitate is formed, sulphate ions are present.
Lithium flame test
