C1.2 Flashcards
What is the chemical formula for calcium carbonate?
CaCO3
Name some uses for limestone
- As a raw material for making cement, mortar and concrete
- As blocks and slabs for walls and pavements
- As aggregate (small lumps) for the base of roads and railways
What are the ingredients mixed with limestone to make mortar and concrete?
Limestone is heated with clay,
To make mortar the limestone is mixed with cement and sand.
To make concrete the limestone is mixed with cement sand and aggregate.
Where is limestone taken from?
Taken from the ground in quarries
Name a good affect of quarrying
New jobs are created and limestone is valuable material for building
Name negatives of quarrying
- Fewer tourists may visit an area that has a working quarry
- extra traffic
- noise, visual and atmospheric
What is thermal decomposition?
Many metal carbonates break down when heating, this is called thermal decomposition
What happens when calcium carbonate is heated?
It decomposes to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide-
CaCO3=CaO+CO2
Name some other carbonates that decompose in the same way calcium carbonate does
Magnesium carbonate
Zinc carbonate
Copper carbonate
What happens when water is added to calcium oxide?
Reacts vigorously to make white solid called calcium hydroxide
What is calcium hydroxide?
An alkali
Alkalis bus solve in water to make alkaline solutions. They neutralise acids
What is the solution of calcium hydroxide in water?
Limewater
What is limewater used for?
It is used as a test for carbon dioxide, carbon dioxide turns limewater cloudy
What does limestone mostly consist of?
Calcium carbonate
