C1.1 - The particle Model Flashcards
What are the features of a chemical change?
- It produces 1 or more new substances
- They are often difficult to reverse
What is a chemical change? Give an example
A chemical change produces one or more new substances that may have very different properties to the original substances
e.g. Cooking eggs, steel rusting …
What is a physical change? Give an example
A physical change is when a substance changes state or shape, or breaks into pieces
What are the features of a physical change?
- No new substances are made
- They are often easy to reverse
Draw a diagram for solid, liquid and gas particles?
Describe the main movement of particles in a solid, liquid and gas ?
Solid - vibrate about fixed positions
Liquid - move around each other
Gas - Move quickly in all directions
Can a solid , liquid or gas be compressed?
Solid and liquid - no , there is no space for the particles to move to
Gas - yes , there is space for the particles to move into
Describe the arrangement of particles in a solid, liquid and gas?
Solid - Regular
Liquid and gas - Random
Describe the relative distance between particles in a solid, liquid or gas?
Solid - Very close
Liquid - Close
Gas - far apart
What are the limitations of drawing a 3D particle model on a 2D piece of paper?
The compromise is that you can only see parts of the particles facing you whilst others are hidden
What does the particle model not take into account?
- The forces between particles
- The size of particles
- The space between particles
What is the name of the model used to visualise the 3 states of matter?
The ‘simple sphere’ model
Label this :
A - Electrons moving around nucleus
B - Neutrons
C - Protons
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that still has chemical properties , each different element Is made from a different type of atom
What subatomic particles is the atom made of ?
Electrons, Protons and Neutrons
