C1.1 Particle Model Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Properties of solids include…
- Vibrate around fixed position
- Strong intermolecular forces
- Cannot be compressed
- Fixed shape and volume
Properties of liquids include…
- Particles freely move past each other
- Weaker intermolecular bonds than solids
- Cannot be compressed
- Takes shape of container, no fixed shape
Properties of a gas include…
- Particles are far apart and fly around each other
- Weak intermolecular forces
- Can be compressed
- Takes shape of container, no fixed shape or volume
What is a physical change?
A reversible change, no new substances are created
What is a chemical change?
An irreversible change, new substances are always created.
What is a precipitation reaction?
When a solid is formed from a solution.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of anything from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
What are the factors that affect rate of diffusion?
- How heavy the particles are (molecular mass)
- How much energy the particles have ((gasses diffuse quicker than liquids)
What are the limitations of the particle model?
- The forces between particles
- The size of the particles
- The space between particles
What is SO3?
Sulphur trioxide
What is CO2?
Carbon dioxide
What is SCl2?
Sulphur dichloride
