C1.1 Fundamental Ideas Flashcards
What are the sub-atomic particles?
Protons, electrons and neutrons.
What charge does a proton have?
Positive
What charge does an Electron have?
Negative
How do you calculate the amount of neutrons in an atom?
Mass number - atomic number.
What’s equal to the amount of protons? Why?
The amount of electrons to cancel out the positive charge so it is neutral.
What does it mean if the atomic structure has a full outer shell?
It means it is less reactive, because it doesn’t want to lose or gain any energy.
What is a covalent bond?
When non-metal atoms react together to gain electrons to fill their outer shell and become stable.
What’s an ionic bond?
When metals and non-metal atoms rest together. They give or take electrons to have a full outer shell.
